OBITUARY – Sir István Elek, Knight Grand Cross, Deputy Prime Minister of KMFAP, passed away

IN MEMORIAM SIR ISTVÁN ELEK
(1935 - 2025)

Dear Dames and Knights,

the Magisterial House of the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta, Federation of the Autonomous Priories (KMFAP) deeply regrets to inform all our Knights and Dames of the passing of our dear brother, Sir István Elek, who was born in Budapest, Hungary and departed this life in Rome, Italy, on the 1st July 2025, just one day after his 90th birthday.

Sir István was among the oldest members of our Order, having been knighted during the Grand Mastership of H.M.E.H. Lorenzo de Valitch in the late 1970s in New York. Throughout his long life, he remained a devoted and dedicated Knight, steadfastly upholding our values and ideals. We are proud and honoured to have had him among us – his gentle nature, calm strength, ever-sweet smile, and good humour left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Sir István also held the high rank of Deputy Prime Minister in the Government of KMFAP, serving with dignity and wisdom. His contributions at the highest levels of leadership reflected his unwavering commitment to the mission and integrity of the Order.

He was a highly respected and successful businessman, known for his generosity and for supporting numerous charitable and humanitarian initiatives with his personal resources. For over two decades, he served with distinction as Honorary Consul of the Republic of Hungary to Monaco, fostering excellent diplomatic relations with many nations.

In this moment of mourning, the Magisterial House extends its deepest and most sincere condolences to Sir István’s family, friends, and all who loved and admired him. We have lost a great man – he will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Requiescat in pace, in Rome!
